We visited the Port of Lagos, a key hub in Nigeria, to conduct an on-site inspection of the region's critical natural gas refueling infrastructure. Our focus was on the NGML-NIPCO refueling station within the port area and the 5.2MMSCFD CNG mother station owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). We held in-depth discussions with station managers to obtain firsthand operational data and assess the current status and potential of CNG applications in heavy logistics.
Itinerary 1: Visit NGML-NIPCO Gas Station at Logas port
At the NGML-NIPCO refueling station, which directly serves port logistics vehicles, the delegation gained a thorough understanding of the core operations of this regional gas supply hub. The station manager shared daily operational data, noting that the station serves a significant number of heavy trucks daily, with customers primarily concentrated in port container shipping, building materials logistics, and intercity long-haul freight. In addition to the dominant CNG-equipped heavy trucks, the types of vehicles refueling are becoming increasingly diverse, including some modified cars and small tricycles. The refueling station currently operates on a three-shift system, with each shift managed by a highly skilled technical and operational team to ensure the safety and efficiency of the refueling and distribution process. Its stable operation is crucial for guaranteeing gas supply to end users.
During the exchange, the delegation was deeply impressed by the station's efficient vehicle turnover rate and the increasing customer demand.

This comprehensive investigation of the CNG refueling "source-end" chain in the port area yielded valuable first-hand operational data. This data on processing capacity, staffing, and the scale and type of service vehicles provides crucial empirical evidence for scientifically analyzing the economics of Nigerian CNG fuel, assessing the return on investment in the refueling network, and planning a clean energy transition path for heavy-duty transportation.
