The Thanlyin Refinery has successfully commissioned its Atmospheric Distillation Unit (ADU), a landmark milestone in the refinery restart that marks a new chapter for Myanmar’s energy security.
The milestone includes: the successful startup of the ADU; a commissioning ceremony held at Thanlyin Refinery; the official inauguration ceremony scheduled for the 14th; and other related activities marking the refinery restart.
Ahead of the official inauguration ceremony, the Union Minister for Energy and the Secretary to the President visited Thanlyin Refinery, where they received a briefing on commissioning progress, inspected key facilities, and provided guidance for subsequent preparations. Their visit underscores the strategic importance of the refinery restart to Myanmar’s energy sector.
The ADU is a critical unit in the refining process, responsible for fractionating crude oil into naphtha, kerosene, diesel, atmospheric residue, and other refined fractions. Its successful startup demonstrates operational readiness across process systems, utility systems, instrumentation and control, and safety interlock systems. It also lays a solid foundation for the refinery’s full restart, stable operation, and future capacity ramp-up.
This achievement represents a concrete step toward enhancing Myanmar’s refining capacity, strengthening the downstream sector, reducing reliance on imported refined products, and reinforcing national energy security.
The official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for the 14th. Preparations on site are proceeding in an orderly manner, alongside other related workstreams. Further updates will be provided as the refinery advances toward integrated commissioning, performance testing, and full operational status.
